After a tank is installed, the cathodic protection is first tested within 12 to 18 months. After that, it is tested at intervals not to exceed 36 months, and again after any repair. It is not a flat every-three-years rule, and getting the cadence right is the whole job. LP Integrity books the next test automatically on every pass, so the interval never lapses.

A tank is protected when the structure-to-soil reading is at or more negative than -0.85 volts, measured against a copper/copper-sulfate reference cell. A less negative reading, for example -0.71 volts, fails and means the sacrificial anode is spent and the steel is no longer protected.

Yes. A qualified independent tester can perform the reading and produce the documented record. Because LP Integrity does not sell propane, the reading is not tied to a fuel contract. Many owners and propane companies prefer an independent record precisely because there is no incentive to fudge the number.

A supplier can refuse to fill a buried tank without current, documented cathodic protection, because filling an unprotected tank is a liability and can void insurance. A passing test and a dated certificate clear the block. If it fails, we replace the anode and retest so it can be filled again.

A standard home inspection does not cover the cathodic protection on a buried propane tank, so a buyer, lender, or insurer can raise it late and stall a closing. A failed reading means the sacrificial anode is spent. The fix is usually a new anode bag, sometimes a dielectric fitting, followed by a retest to confirm protection is restored. LP Integrity does both the repair and the retest, and the original test cost is credited toward it.
